Where/how to find the value of unusual antiques?

I have inherited an attic full of treasures- but many of them are not common enough to be found on e-bay. Some of things may be facinating, but of little to no $ value, others could be worth a lot of money. I can’t afford to hire an auction house, just to see if there is anything of interest. Any suggestions?
