The term “book price” intimidates potential buyers, so why are there so many price guides published? I’ve noticed on Ebay that things like glassware, pottery and other “collectibles” usually sell for 10 to 50% of the current book prices.

my sister and i are interested in collecting and selling antiques… is there anything we should know? what sorts of things would sell well at auctions ie what is collectible? to begin with we are probably not looking at spending over $100 AU on items until we learn more about it. any ideas/suggestions/tips would be greatly appreciated! thanks

I have two old rare books i picked up at a garage sale. One is (The English Citizen, Local Government) by M.D. Chalmers published in 1883. I found it on one website for 35$. But couldnt compare it as it couldnt find it any where else. I also have (The world’s greatest books vol 1) by Aurthur Mee, which has been reprinted alot over time but my copy was printed in 1910. Is there a good way to find the value of these books?

The deluge of antiques programes on telly is starting to drive me up the wall. Has anyone else found that Antiques Roadshow, Flog It, Cash In The Attic et al bores them to tears?

And do you think the credit crunch will crush the antiques market as no one wants to spend money on old junk, or will it send it rocketing as people try to flog even more rubbish / make fast money?
